Our favourite surf spots

Nanarup

Nanarup Point

This is the point at Nanarup which is our favourite surf location, but in the last couple of years has not been working as it should.,
This is because of global warming which has resulted in a change in the normal swell direction form Southerly and South Westerly to Westerly so the channels and banks are no longer forming correctly to create well shaped waves. Not good!

Deserts

We also surf a spot called Deserts further up the beach

Mutton Bird

We have been surfing here more lately because Nanarup has not been working. Mutton Bird usually has a few peaks so there are plenty of waves for everybody. It can turn pretty nasty though with top to bottom close out sets, but on it's day is fantastic.

Floodgates

This is a spot called Floodgates.

Middleton Beach

During summer when the strong SE/E winds blow an easterly swell develops that results in the closest beach to town working and when it does it can be brilliant. It is fantastic when the swell is running well there as it is only about five minutes from our house rather than the 25 to 75 km trips that we are normally faced with.

Mids beach break 2007

I have heard that it has happened before, but in the summer of 2007 a super storm further east from Albany whipped up a massive SE swell which resulted in the point working at Middleton Beach. The waves were absolutely massive and way to big for me to consider going out in but there were some who were up to the challenge as you can see from the next image.

Denmark

Occasionally make the trip West to Denmark to surf the only consistently working point break at Ocean Beach.

Ocean Beach Denmark

There are beach breaks all the way round the bay and we particularly like the wave that breaks in front of the rivermouth.

Other surf spots

We have also started to go out to Cheynes Beach which also works in a Easterly and Parry's Beach which is a really quality wave and well worth the long drive to experience.
Very occasionally when the conditions are right we get to surf a big rolling longboard wave at Gull Rock and even less often at a place with a fancy name - Malloolaba.
